Futuristic Play: Obama and McCain: How political marketing has evolved from offline to online

As a republican, this info is a bit disturbing, but as an internet marketer, it's a very interesting read. It's interesting how many things marketing principles really come in handy for besides just making money.

When Obama picked his VP supposedly he text message his picks to followers. This is an interesting move because 1. He waited a week later to pick his VP to gather more sign-ins from followers. 2. He used text messages so he could gather names and emails. 3. He used electronic media because he knew this would attract the already wired younger generation.

    Andrew,

    Very interesting post. Thank you.

The online to offline bridge has been very interesting to watch during this election.

The Obama campaign has used social media to the point of mastery.

But a few points to ponder. Direct mail reaches the older populations whereas the internet targets the younger crowd. As I evaluate this situation it is my speculation that the timing on using the social media combined with offline efforts is what has caused such a stir. This coupled with the fact, that this is a very interesting story that has engaged the US in ways that no other political campaign has in the past.

The viral nature of the story that was distributed via the internet took hold and then the amout of user generated content within the blogosphere and the social media platforms amplified the story even more.

I have been following this social media story on my blog Barack20: Social Media Lessons For Business. This is been a fantastic case study for using social media as a promotional platform.
