i think an interesting comparison is eharmony:

Not as close as you might think. Top ten states in each only shares Wyoming and Montana. Which states are looking for a little love or something more?

Although, eharmony does have much broader adoption, despite being about a quarter in size. so maybe true love is more universal than sex?

my friend formerly of HotOrNot say a similar thing about their core market... it's all people in rural areas that don't have many options to meet people. AdultFriendFinder is just another variation of a dating site, I think. I would guess a broad swath of dating sites have similar geographic profiles.

Yup that was my logic for guessing it. At first I was thinking something rural/outdoorsy as well, but there's no real big web sites for those. Then I started thinking about what else all those people in low density areas would want.

My first thought was either the NRA or Cabelas.com (hunting/fishing gear). Cabelas comes close. Turns out they're just lonely out there between hunting and fishing trips :-)

Not sure which website, but I'm pretty sure that's a site related to either fishing or hunting. Hunting seems to give better numbers for ND and SD, so that's my guess.

Before making this map I also tried queries like "tito ortiz" "jenna jameson" "nascar" and stuff like that. Pretty fun to look at those graphs.

Hmm. Something popular in less populous states... It's not just red states, either because New England is over-represented and the south is under-represented. (And it isn't Fox News, which is most popular in the southeast.)

My guess would be some kind of cold-weather sport. Maybe a hockey site?
